COVID ALERT - From 4Th January 2023 Boston schools to require Masks

As the winter break comes to a close and students return to school, the Boston

Public Schools system has announced that masks will be mandatory for all

students and staff. The decision, which aligns with guidelines from the Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), comes as the number of COVID-19 cases

continues to rise in the city and across the state.

According to Boston Public Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius, the mask requirement

is necessary to help prevent the spread of the virus within the school

community. "The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top

priority, and we believe that requiring masks is a critical step in protecting

against the spread of COVID-19," she said in a statement.

The mask requirement will apply to all students and staff in grades K-12, as well

as anyone entering a school building. This includes visitors, contractors, and

other non-school personnel. Masks must be worn at all times while in the school

building, with the exception of when students are eating or drinking.

The school system will provide masks for students and staff who do not have their

own, and will have additional supplies on hand for those who need to replace

their masks during the school day. Students and staff who have medical

conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask will be given accommodations,

as directed by the school nurse.

The Boston Public Schools system joins a growing list of school districts across

the country that are requiring masks as a precaution against COVID-19. While

some may argue that the mask requirement infringes on individual freedoms, the

overwhelming scientific evidence supports the effectiveness of masks in

reducing the spread of the virus. By requiring masks, Boston schools are taking

a proactive step to protect the health and safety of their students and staff.

The mask requirement will go into effect when students return to in-person learning, which is currently scheduled for January 4th.

· While masks have been strongly recommended for students and staff in Boston schools throughout the pandemic, this marks the first time that they will be required.

The decision to require masks was made in consultation with public health officials and the Boston Teachers Union.

In addition to the mask requirement, Boston schools will also continue to follow other safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including social distancing, regular cleaning and disinfection, and hand hygiene.

·Students and families will be provided with information and resources on how to properly wear and care for masks, as well as any accommodations that may be available for those who are unable to wear a mask due to a medical condition.

The mask requirement is in line with guidance from the CDC, which recommends that individuals wear masks in public settings and when around people who are not fully vaccinated.

The Boston Public Schools system serves approximately 57,000 students and employs over 10,000 staff members. By requiring masks, the district is taking a proactive step to protect the health and safety of its students and staff, as well as the broader community.
