VIVIENE WESTWOOD DIES AT 81

Doyenne of British design Vivienne Westwood, who melded music and fashion together to help define punk and brought rebellious politics to the catwalk, died on Thursday aged 81, her family said.

"Vivienne Westwood died today, peacefully and surrounded by her family, in Clapham, South London. The world needs people like Vivienne to make a change for the better," her fashion label's Twitter account said.

Vivienne Westwood is a British fashion designer and

businesswoman who is known for her avant-garde and punk-inspired designs. She rose to fame in the 1970s as the designer of the clothing worn by the Sex Pistols, a British punk rock band, and has since become one of the most influential figures in the fashion industry. Westwood is known for her use of bold patterns and colours, as well as her incorporation of political and social themes into her work. She has also been a vocal advocate for environmental and social justice issues. 

Westwood has received numerous awards and accolades for her work, including the Order of the British Empire and the Council of Fashion Designers of America's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Vivienne Westwood was born in Glossop, Derbyshire, England in 1941. 

She attended the University of London, where she studied art and design. In the 1970s, Westwood and her then-partner, Malcolm McLaren, opened a store called "SEX" in London's King's Road, which sold clothing and accessories influenced by the punk movement. Westwood designed the clothing worn by the Sex Pistols, and her designs helped to define the punk aesthetic.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Westwood's fashion career took off, and she became known for her innovative and often controversial designs. She has shown her collections at Paris Fashion Week and has also designed costumes for theater and opera productions. In addition to her work in fashion, Westwood is also known for her activism on environmental and social justice issues. She has been a vocal critic of fast fashion and has spoken out on issues such as climate change and human rights.

Westwood has received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the fashion industry, including the Order of the British Empire, which she was awarded in 1992, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America's Lifetime Achievement Award, which she received in 2007.
