  FOCACCIA - COOKING WITH AYEH

Focaccia is a type of Italian flatbread that is often seasoned with herbs and other flavourful ingredients. It is similar to pizza dough and can be baked plain or topped with a variety of ingredients such as vegetables, cheese, and cured meats.

To make focaccia, you will need flour, yeast, salt, and water. You can also add herbs, spices, and other flavourings to the dough if you like. Begin by mixing the flour, yeast, salt, and any other dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add water and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly oil a baking sheet or a large baking dish. Once the dough has risen, stretch it out to fit the baking sheet or dish and press dimples into the surface with your fingertips. Brush the top of the dough with olive oil and sprinkle with herbs or other toppings, if desired. Bake the focaccia for 20-25 minutes, or until it is golden brown.

Focaccia is a versatile bread that can be served as an appetiser, a side dish, or even as a main course. It is delicious when served warm, and it can also be stored in an airtight container and eaten later. You can experiment with different flavour combinations and toppings to create your own unique focaccia creations.

There are many variations of focaccia that you can try, depending on your preferences and the ingredients that you have available. Some common flavourings and toppings for focaccia include:

  • Herbs: Fresh herbs such as rosemary, oregano, thyme, and basil are a classic choice for focaccia. You can sprinkle the herbs over the top of the dough before baking, or you can mix them into the dough itself.

  • Cheese: Grated cheese such as Parmesan or Pecorino Romano can add flavour and texture to focaccia. You can sprinkle the cheese over the top of the dough before baking, or you can mix it into the dough itself.

  • Vegetables: Focaccia is a great way to use up leftover vegetables. You can top the dough with sliced tomatoes, roasted red peppers, caramelised onions, or any other vegetables that you like.

  • Cured meats: Thinly sliced cured meats such as prosciutto, salami, or pancetta can add flavor and protein to focaccia.

  • Fruits: Dried fruits such as cranberries or raisins can add a touch of sweetness to focaccia. You can mix them into the dough or sprinkle them over the top.

There are many other ingredients that you can use to flavour and top your focaccia. Get creative and try out different combinations to see what you like best.
